Taishu shokudo 大衆食堂
An eatery forordinary people.
Everyone calls us DOMO. The full name is DOMO Japanese Country Foods Restaurant, and country means countryside: the small eateries beside rural train stations where locals and travelers ate comfort food at fair prices, off mismatched plates, sometimes on beer crates.
Gaku Homma grew up with those places in Tohoku. He has run DOMO the same way since 1996: no reservations, no substitutions, no pretense. It has won a shelf of awards and it is still not a fancy restaurant. That is the point.

The meal 定食
One plate isnever one plate.
Order a teriyaki, a nabe or a donburi and the table fills up around it. Seven small dishes change with what the kitchen has that day: pickles, a simmered vegetable, a salad, something with tofu, something with seaweed. Then rice and miso. Come hungry, and share.

DOMO shares its walls with Nippon Kan, the aikido dojo Homma Sensei founded in 1978. The restaurant opened to support the dojo and the students who travel here to train. The garden, the shrine and the museum grew up around it. Everything here was built by hand, most of it by the people who train next door.

DOMO is a taishu shokudo, an eatery for ordinary people. It works because everyone who walks in understands what it is. These are the owner's requests, in his words more or less.

Walk-ins only
We do not take reservations, for anyone. The wait can pass 30 minutes at peak. Come after 2 for a late lunch or before 5 for an early dinner and you will usually be seated right away.

The recipes do not change
DOMO's dishes are built from many ingredients combined the way they are meant to be. We are not able to alter recipes for allergies or dietary preferences. Please read the menu with that in mind.

Bring a layer
When it turns cold we close the partition to the garden, but we still open it every half hour or so to let fresh air through. A jacket or a knee blanket makes a long lunch cozier.

You are welcome to visit the Musubido and the museum from the garden. If you bring children, bring them with you.
